The Baltimore Orioles have been busy this offseason, but there are still concerns for the team.
The 2024 season was another solid year for the Orioles, as they secured over 90 wins for the second consecutive season, making it to the playoffs again. However, despite their regular-season success, they failed to win a postseason game in both 2023 and 2024.
The team was aware that two key players, Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander, would be heading to free agency. Both have since signed with other teams. While the Orioles decided to part ways with Santander and brought in Tyler O’Neill as a replacement, they are still searching for a true ace to lead their pitching staff.
Last offseason, acquiring Burnes, a former Cy Young winner, was a crucial move for the team, so losing him to free agency is a significant setback.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently discussed the Orioles’ priorities heading into Spring Training, emphasizing their need for a No. 1 starter.
“Corbin Burnes is gone, and Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano aren’t viable replacements for the top spot in the rotation. A reunion with Jack Flaherty is still possible for Baltimore, as is a potential trade for Luis Castillo if the team remains interested in a deal with the Mariners.”
While Morton and Sugano bring experience, neither is considered a true front-line starter at this point.
The Orioles are focused on contending right now, and while depth in the rotation is important for getting to the postseason, a true ace and a strong bullpen are necessary to make a deep playoff run.
Jack Flaherty, currently the best free-agent option, could step in as the Orioles’ No. 1 starter. Additionally, Luis Castillo from the Mariners is another potential target, though the cost in prospects might be high.
Although no move has been made yet to replace Burnes, there are still options available. If the Orioles aim to compete in the American League, securing a top-tier starter should be a priority before Spring Training.
