After acquiring Garrett Crochet in a trade, the Boston Red Sox should feel confident about signing him to a long-term extension. While he performed exceptionally well last season, concerns remain about whether he can sustain that level of success. Last year marked his first full season as a starter, and his performance dipped in the second half, raising questions about his long-term consistency. Despite these concerns, the Red Sox were comfortable making a major trade for him, so letting him walk later wouldn’t make much sense. Unless the deal turns into a major disappointment, Boston has every reason to extend him.
Crochet isn’t set to reach free agency until 2027, giving the Red Sox some time to evaluate him. When that time comes, CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa projects he could command a contract around $150 million—an expensive commitment for a pitcher who has yet to prove elite over an extended period. Axisa suggests a six-year extension that pays $10 million in 2026 (his final arbitration year) and $25 million annually from 2027-31, totaling $135 million, with potential bonuses pushing it to $150 million. Ultimately, Boston’s decision will hinge on his performance over the next season. If he consistently dominates, expect the Red Sox to lock him into a long-term deal.
