The Boston Red Sox made two crucial moves to bolster their starting rotation ahead of the upcoming season.

Craig Breslow kicked things off by acquiring left-handed pitcher in a high-profile trade. Following that, the Red Sox signed two-time World Series champion Walker Buehler to a one-year contract.

These upgrades to the pitching staff earned Boston recognition from ESPN’s, who highlighted the moves as some of his “favorites” of the offseason so far.

“Crochet was the hottest name on the winter trade market, seen as an ace-adjacent pitcher — if not a true ace — under a significantly below-market contract for the next two seasons,” McDaniel wrote. “This window gives Boston the chance to either lock him into an extension before free agency or secure a compensatory draft pick when he leaves. The Red Sox put together a strong trade package tailored to the White Sox’s needs, though it didn’t require parting with a future star. Boston’s recent scouting and development success allowed them to make this deal without sacrificing one of their top prospects.

McDaniel also praised the Buehler signing, emphasizing that Boston avoided overpaying for the experienced pitcher.

“Buehler is probably more of a No. 3 or No. 4 starter than an ace at this stage,” McDaniel noted. “I expect him to settle as a No. 3 option. His 2024 season showed he was still adapting to a new reality with less explosive raw stuff. However, he flashed a promising new version of himself late in the season and during the playoffs. Boston is getting excellent value for a mid-rotation starter, especially when comparable players are commanding close to $100 million this winter.”
