While many fans are hoping the Cincinnati Reds will acquire an outfielder at this week’s MLB Winter Meetings, securing a backup catcher may be an even more urgent need. Tyler Stephenson is the only catcher on the Reds’ 40-man roster, and the team lacks a reliable backup in the minors. However, there could be some assistance on the way.
Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that the Reds are interested in signing free-agent catcher James McCann. The former All-Star has spent the last two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, serving as a backup to their emerging star, Adley Rutschman.

James McCann, a seasoned veteran with 11 years of Major League experience, could be a key addition for the Reds. President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall had previously hinted at targeting an upgrade behind the plate, specifically seeking a backup catcher who could step in as a starter if necessary. McCann last played over 100 games in 2021 with the New York Mets, marking his most recent season of regular action.
The Reds parted ways with Luke Maile earlier this offseason, declining his 2025 club option. Despite Maile’s offensive struggles, his leadership and relationship with the pitching staff were invaluable. If the Reds miss out on McCann, they could look to re-sign Maile on a more affordable deal.
If McCann isn’t available, other notable free-agent catchers remain, including former Reds farmhand Yasmani Grandal, former All-Star Elias Diaz, and two-time Gold Glove winner Tucker Barnhart.
The Reds are determined not to repeat the catcher situation from 2022, when Tyler Stephenson played only 50 games and six other catchers were used. While Alex Jackson is on a minor-league deal, adding McCann or another experienced catcher is a priority for the team this winter.
