The Cincinnati Reds traded for infielder Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, sending a draft pick and an outfield prospect in return. The deal strengthens a Reds lineup aiming to contend in the National League Central this season.
Lux, 27, has won two World Series titles with the Dodgers and displayed potential that once placed him among the top prospects in baseball. However, with the Dodgers shifting Mookie Betts to shortstop and adding infielder Hyeseong Kim, Lux became available for trade. In exchange, the Dodgers received Cincinnati’s competitive balance Round A pick (valued at approximately $2.5 million in bonus-pool money) and outfielder Mike Sirota, a 2024 third-round pick.
Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall expressed excitement about Lux’s addition, noting that he could help deepen the lineup, particularly as a left-handed hitter who performs well against right-handed pitchers.
Cincinnati already has several players competing for Lux’s primary positions, including shortstop Elly De La Cruz, second baseman Matt McLain, and third baseman Noelvi Marte. However, Lux’s ability to play 45 games in the outfield gives the Reds flexibility to move him around as needed for at-bats.
After a slow start to 2024 due to an ACL injury that sidelined him in 2023, Lux had a strong second half, batting .304/.390/.508 and accumulating two wins above replacement in 61 games. He is expected to earn just over $3 million in arbitration this year and will become a free agent after the 2026 season.
The Reds, now under manager Terry Francona, are looking to improve after a disappointing 77-85 season despite standout performances from De La Cruz and right-hander Hunter Greene.
In return, the Dodgers receive the extra $2.5 million in draft capital to help offset their depleted bonus pool. Due to exceeding the luxury tax by over $40 million, the Dodgers’ first-round draft pick, originally set to be 30th overall, was moved back to 40th.
Sirota, 21, has impressed teams with his power, speed, and patience. Initially drafted by the Dodgers in 2021, Sirota chose to attend Northeastern and later became a 2023 third-round pick for the Reds, who signed him for $863,300.
