The New Orleans Saints didn’t have a large sample size to assess Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but they saw enough to bring him back for another season. After a brief stint with the team to close out 2024, the Saints have re-signed the running back for the 2025 season.
NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Edwards-Helaire is returning to New Orleans on a one-year deal.
He originally joined the Saints in December following his release from the Kansas City Chiefs. It didn’t take long for the fifth-year back to land in New Orleans, a familiar destination for former Chiefs players like Tyrann Mathieu, Khalen Saunders, and Tanoh Kpassagnon.
Though Edwards-Helaire only appeared in two games late in the season with limited touches, he managed 46 rushing yards on 13 carries and added three receptions for 24 yards.
A versatile but unspectacular option out of the backfield, Edwards-Helaire offers value in a rotational role. While the Chiefs never fully unlocked his potential after drafting him in the first round in 2020, another team might find a better way to utilize his skill set.
Kansas City brought him back on a one-year deal in 2024, but he started the season on the non-football injury list. Even after being activated, he was often a healthy scratch before being released to free up a roster spot.
Over his four active seasons with the Chiefs, Edwards-Helaire totaled 1,891 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 441 carries, along with 89 receptions for 765 yards and seven receiving scores.
