The St. Louis Cardinals have some catching up to do.
With the Winter Meetings in the rearview mirror and Spring Training still a few months away, the Cardinals have been relatively quiet this offseason. Although rumors have swirled around Nolan Arenado’s future, the team has yet to make any significant roster upgrades.
Meanwhile, their National League Central rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs, have been busy. Both teams pulled off major trades on Friday, with the Cubs making perhaps the biggest splash. Chicago acquired Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros and continued to bolster their roster.
The Cubs also signed former Cardinals catcher Carson Kelly to a two-year, $11.5 million deal, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
“Catcher Carson Kelly’s deal with the Chicago Cubs is for two years and $11.5 million, sources tell ESPN,” Passan noted. “On a big day with the addition of Kyle Tucker, the Cubs also add to their catching depth.”
By adding both a superstar outfielder and a reliable depth catcher, the Cubs have strengthened their roster significantly. Kelly, originally drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2012 MLB Draft, spent the first three years of his career in St. Louis.
