The Denver Broncos successfully signed free-agent tight end Evan Engram, outbidding the Los Angeles Chargers for his services. Engram’s unexpected release from the Jacksonville Jaguars made him the top available tight end on the market.
However, the Broncos aren’t the only team in need of offensive weapons, and they’re not even the only AFC West team looking for help. On Wednesday afternoon, reports confirmed that Denver secured Engram on a two-year, $23 million deal.
Broncos insider Mike Klis noted that both Denver and Los Angeles offered similar contracts, but Engram ultimately chose the Broncos.
Does this signal that Denver is becoming a more attractive destination for free agents? In recent years, how often has a high-profile player opted for the Broncos over another team? While financial incentives play a role, Engram has been in the league since 2017 and has already earned a solid payday. It’s encouraging to see Denver successfully land a player who will be a key target in their offense.
Head coach Sean Payton has frequently discussed the ‘Joker’ role in his system, and Engram is a perfect fit. His size and skill set allow him to line up in the slot or function as a big-bodied receiver. Since 2022, Engram has caught 234 of his 305 targets, boasting an impressive 76.7% catch rate.
That level of efficiency over three seasons is remarkable, especially considering his early-career struggles with drops. With 496 career receptions and 4,922 receiving yards, he’s on the verge of reaching two major milestones in Denver—500 career catches and 5,000 career yards.
Over a full 17-game season, Engram has averaged 78 receptions, 775 yards, and four touchdowns. That kind of production will be a valuable asset for the Broncos’ offense. Had he signed with the Chargers, it would have been a concern, given his ability to create matchup problems. Undoubtedly, Sean Payton already has plenty of plans for how to maximize Engram’s impact in Denver.
