The St. Louis Cardinals are eager to trade third baseman, hoping to offload the remaining $52 million on his contract. They’re so motivated to make a deal that they’re reportedly open to covering a significant portion of his salary to facilitate a trade.
No-trade clause adds complexity to the situation, but it’s been reported that he’s willing to waive it for a move to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If the Dodgers could land at a reduced cost while avoiding the majority of his contract, it would be an easy decision for them.
Here’s a proposed trade that would send Arenado to the Dodgers, where he would join their star-studded roster under manager Dave Roberts:
Los Angeles Dodgers receive: 3B Nolan Arenado, $25 million
St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Bobby Miller
This trade is relatively straightforward.
The Dodgers would add a multi-time Platinum Glove winner to a position they could improve. Arenado, satisfied with the move, would slot into the Dodgers’ lineup as a middle-of-the-order hitter. The Cardinals would pay $25 million to cover half of Arenado’s contract.
In return, the Cardinals would acquire high-potential pitching prospect Bobby Miller.
Miller made his MLB debut in 2023, starting 22 games for the Dodgers. The hard-throwing right-hander impressed early on, reaching 100 MPH with his fastball and posting a WAR over 2.0. However, his performance drastically declined in 2024, with a -1.9 WAR, 8.52 ERA, and 1.77 WHIP.
Given the Dodgers’ deep rotation, it’s unlikely Miller will find a steady role there, making a change of scenery almost essential for his career. While Miller is a high-risk, high-reward prospect for the Cardinals, the opportunity to shed half of Arenado’s contract makes it a gamble worth taking.
