The rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres is one of the fiercest in sports, and it was on full display during the 2024 postseason. Tensions ran high as players, fans, and coaches engaged in heated exchanges throughout their postseason series. Now, this rivalry may carry over into free agency.
R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports has predicted that the Dodgers might snatch one of the Padres’ top pitchers in free agency: star closer Tanner Scott. Acquired by the Padres at the 2024 trade deadline for a substantial package of prospects, Scott is projected by Jon Heyman of the New York Post to land a $54 million contract. “Scott is an obvious target for every contender and was linked to both the Yankees and Dodgers earlier this winter,” Anderson noted. While the Yankees have since added Devin Williams via trade, the Dodgers have yet to bolster their bullpen. Anderson concluded, “The Dodgers don’t lose a lot of bidding wars, so we’ll go ahead and pencil them in.”
A move to the Dodgers seems both logical and likely for Scott, as Los Angeles has the resources and a need for a closer. While Evan Phillips and Blake Treinen are solid right-handed options, Scott would add left-handed versatility and better overall production. His addition would give manager Dave Roberts more flexibility in managing the closer role.
