As you can imagine, I keep a pretty close watch on “Hokies Twitter,” or X as it’s now called. It’s mostly the usual stuff—“Fire Brent Pry,” “Bring back Beamer,” “Nike Pro Combat Black was the best,” you know, typical internet chatter. But every now and then, you stumble across a small nugget of interesting info. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I tend to read into it. And when I saw this particular tweet, I nearly spit out my drink.
For those unfamiliar, Jerod Evans was an absolute powerhouse during his time with the Hokies. He led Virginia Tech to the ACC Championship game in 2016, which was Justin Fuente’s second-to-last year as head coach. That was also Evans’ only season in Blacksburg, leaving with one year of eligibility still left. I’ve always wondered why he left—why would he leave a program to be a low to mid-round NFL draft pick at best? He ended up signing as an undrafted free agent with the Eagles but never found a permanent spot on a roster. Despite his size, speed, and solid arm, he never fully materialized in the NFL. But this run he had in 2016? Unbelievable.
When I first read the tweet in question, I wasn’t sure who Evans was referring to. He started his college career at the Air Force Academy, but after tearing his ACL, he transferred to Trinity Valley Community College, where he set a record-breaking number of marks.

When he came to Virginia Tech, I was hyped. The 2016 season was full of excitement. New coach, new quarterback—everything seemed to be aligning. He took the Hokies to the brink, even putting Clemson on the ropes for much of the title game. But what really keeps me wondering is less about why he wants to come back and more about why he left in the first place.

Evans was the kind of quarterback you could trust. He had the physical tools, he could take over games, and, above all, he was a natural leader. It’s clear that Hokie fans on X want him back in some capacity. And it didn’t take long for me to spot this telling reply:
