NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto will be formally introduced as a member of the New York Mets at Citi Field on Thursday, following the finalization of his record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract on Wednesday.
Soto made the decision to accept the Mets’ offer on Sunday, opting to leave the Yankees after playing a pivotal role in their run to the World Series during his lone season in the Bronx.
At 26 years old, Soto’s deal surpasses Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers from last December. It also exceeds the length of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s $340 million, 14-year agreement with the Padres, which extends through 2034. Soto’s contract includes a provision allowing him to become a free agent after five years. However, the Mets can negate this clause by adding $40 million to the final 10 years of the agreement, increasing the total to $805 million.
This season, Soto hit .288 with 41 home runs, 109 RBIs, and 129 walks. Over his seven-year MLB career with Washington, San Diego, and the Yankees, he has posted a .285 batting average, 201 home runs, 592 RBIs, and 769 walks.
