The New York Mets have been active this offseason, bringing back Pete Alonso and acquiring Juan Soto. They’ve also bolstered their pitching staff by adding Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, and Griffin Canning to join Kodai Senga in the rotation. With all five spots filled, it appears unlikely that left-hander José Quintana will return.
Chad Jennings of The Athletic predicts Quintana could land with the San Diego Padres.
“If they’re still exploring trades for Dylan Cease or Michael King, they’ll need additional arms to cover innings. The Padres could also use more pitching depth, and Quintana, 36, is coming off another solid season,” Jennings wrote.
Last season, Quintana posted a 10-10 record with a 3.75 ERA across 31 starts, logging 170 1/3 innings with a 1.25 WHIP. He played a crucial role in the Mets’ postseason run, delivering a standout performance in the NLDS-clinching win over the Phillies.
Losing him would be a blow, as questions remain about the Mets’ revamped rotation. Holmes is transitioning into a starting role, Senga dealt with injuries last season, and Manaea’s ability to sustain his success is uncertain.
If Quintana does sign with the Padres, he could provide a steadying presence in their rotation. His next move will be worth watching.
