EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings have locked in a cornerstone of their defense, signing safety Josh Metellus to a three-year contract extension on Saturday. This deal—reportedly worth $36 million, with a potential max value of $42 million and $25 million guaranteed—ensures Metellus will continue his rise with the franchise that drafted him in the sixth round back in 2020.
“I’m here, baby. I’m here,” Metellus declared proudly before training camp practice, making it clear this team is home.
Originally a core special teams player, Metellus transformed into a versatile defensive weapon under DC Brian Flores in 2023. Despite being listed as a safety, he has played up to seven different positions in a single game. Over the past two seasons, he’s started 27 games and logged a staggering 90% of the team’s defensive snaps.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Metellus’ journey:
“Some guys are handed early success as first-rounders. But Josh? He earned every snap, every dollar. That’s what makes this so special.”
Unlike former teammate Camryn Bynum—who walked last year and signed a $60M deal with the Colts—Metellus never wavered. Even while managing an ankle injury and limited reps during OTAs, he stayed engaged and never played hardball in negotiations.
“I never wanted to test free agency,” Metellus said. “This is home. I want to finish my career here. I believe in what we’re building—and I want to win a ring for this city.”
With the Metellus deal complete, Minnesota’s offseason spending spree now tops $350 million in cash committed to the 2025 roster, taking full advantage of J.J. McCarthy’s rookie contract. The Vikings have added or extended several key veterans, including Aaron Jones Sr., Byron Murphy Jr., Harrison Smith, and Andrew Van Ginkel.
