Montreal Canadiens winger Patrik Laine has spoken about his recent decrease in ice time, recognizing the need for self-evaluation. After the team suffered four consecutive losses in late January, Laine’s average ice time dropped to 11:57 minutes per game in February—a significant decline from his January average of 16:12, which included a season-high 20:41 against the New York Rangers on January 19.
In the first year of a four-year, $34.8 million contract with Montreal, Laine has struggled with consistency, recording 12 goals and six assists for 18 points in 28 games while carrying a -11 rating. Addressing his reduced role, he commented, “Do I want to be out there more? Of course. Who wouldn’t? But I don’t want to dwell on it too much. When you’re playing 10 minutes a night, it’s tough when you’re used to getting more time.”
Selected second overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2016 NHL Draft, Laine made an immediate impact with 36 goals as a rookie and 44 in his second season. Now facing adversity, he stressed the importance of personal responsibility, saying, “At times like this, you have to take a hard look at yourself. You have to put in the effort and find ways to make things happen. It can be tough, but I see this as an opportunity to regain confidence and build momentum for the rest of the season.”
Laine was acquired by the Canadiens on August 19 in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Last season, a broken clavicle limited him to just 18 games, and while he has made a strong return, challenges remain.
As Montreal continues its season, Laine’s ability to overcome these struggles and elevate his game will be vital for both his own success and that of the team.
