The Leafs are banking on Knies evolving into a future star. While it’s a fair deal for both sides, Toronto is clearly investing in his long-term potential. Right now, he’s a dependable top-six winger who brings an ideal mix of size, physicality, and scoring ability. He complements stars like Auston Matthews and William Nylander well.
Coming on the heels of John Tavares’ team-friendly extension over the weekend, this move is being viewed as another positive step for the franchise.
TSN’s Darren Dreger noted: “There was significant progress yesterday after hours of negotiations. Toronto gets credit here, especially since Knies’ camp was reportedly pushing for a shorter term.”
