When it comes to the Philadelphia Phillies’ starting lineup, there aren’t many question marks.
With star players locked into nearly every position, the daily lineup is mostly set, making it difficult for others to break in unless injuries occur. This stability has been evident in recent years, as the batting order has remained largely unchanged throughout the season.
Because of this, the Phillies face some tough decisions when finalizing their Opening Day roster, especially with several notable players out of minor league options, as highlighted by Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors:
- Kody Clemens, IF/OF
- Buddy Kennedy, IF/OF
- Rafael Marchan, C
- Tyler Phillips, SP
- Jose Ruiz, RP
- Cristopher Sanchez, SP
- Edmundo Sosa, IF
However, Cristopher Sanchez and Edmundo Sosa are secure. Sanchez has solidified his place in the Phillies’ rotation with a long-term extension, while Sosa is transitioning into an outfield role to increase his playing opportunities in 2025 as a utility player.
That leaves Clemens, Kennedy, and Marchan in a precarious position.
With Weston Wilson sidelined for Opening Day due to injury, either Clemens or Kennedy will likely claim the final bench spot, while the other is designated for assignment and exposed to waivers. At the start of spring, both seemed at risk of being DFA’d due to the Phillies’ deep roster, but now one has a chance to stick.
Marchan’s lack of options likely secures him the backup catcher role behind J.T. Realmuto, forcing fan favorite Garrett Stubbs to begin the year in Triple-A. However, Marchan’s hold on the spot will depend on his performance and health. If he struggles or suffers another injury, the Phillies may have no choice but to DFA him, and he would likely be claimed by another team.
As for Tyler Phillips and Jose Ruiz, they are the most likely DFA candidates. Ruiz contributed out of the bullpen last season, but with Taijuan Walker potentially shifting to a relief role and the addition of swingman Joe Ross, Ruiz may find himself on the outside looking in.
Phillips faces a similar situation in the rotation, where he appears to be the odd man out.
