The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off a blockbuster trade on Sunday, sending a package of prospects to the Miami Marlins in exchange for ace pitcher. He will join a Phillies starting rotation already featuring four All-Stars. However, his arrival signals changes in the roster, with some players likely leaving Philadelphia.
FanSided’s Mark Powell recently speculated that the Phillies might part ways with outfielder Austin Hays, who they acquired at the 2024 trade deadline as a platoon option. Injuries, including a hamstring issue, hindered Hays’ performance, leading to a disappointing season. According to Powell, “After a disappointing 2024 season, it’s clear Dave Dombrowski does not view Hays as an essential member of their core.” MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki added that it was unsurprising Hays was non-tendered ahead of free agency. Now a free agent, Spotrac projects Hays to sign a one-year deal worth around $10 million.
Hays was likely seen as a rental when the Phillies traded for him, and his underwhelming performance makes it an easy decision for the team to let him go. Instead, Philadelphia could pursue a more impactful right-handed outfielder, such as Teoscar Hernández or Luis Robert Jr.
