The Phillies have signed infielder Christian Arroyo to a minor-league deal, per Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors. He’ll receive a non-roster invitation to spring training.
Once a top-100 prospect, Arroyo has not fully met expectations but has had productive stretches. After being traded from San Francisco, he spent time with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Boston, and Milwaukee, with his best seasons coming in 2021 and 2022 with the Red Sox. During those years, he hit .277 with a .749 OPS and posted 2.2 bWAR over 144 games.
Arroyo struggled in 2023 with Boston and again last year in Milwaukee’s Triple-A system, failing to appear in a major league game in 2024.
Defensively, he has experience at every infield position, primarily playing shortstop in the minors and second base in the majors. He’s been a solid defender at second base, recording 12 Defensive Runs Saved across more than 1,300 innings, though Outs Above Average (-1) is less favorable.
This spring, the Phillies have one open bench spot for a non-catcher, but since they prefer a player with infield and outfield versatility—and others provide more offensive upside—Arroyo is likely on the outside looking in. If he doesn’t make the roster, he’ll still provide valuable upper-minors depth.
