The Pittsburgh Pirates appear to have secured their right fielder for 2025 by signing Tommy Pham to a $4 million deal.
Addressing the corner outfield has been a key priority for the Pirates this offseason, especially after parting ways with Connor Joe and Bryan De La Cruz in November. Pham, who split time between the Minors and stints with the White Sox, Cardinals, and Royals last season, played in 116 games, proving he can still handle a significant workload even after 11 years in the majors.
However, Pham is far from a long-term solution to the team’s ongoing issues in the corner outfield. While he provides a temporary fix, the Pirates are still searching for a more permanent answer. Jack Suwinski and Joshua Palacios remain on the roster, but both have struggled with inconsistency and have yet to establish themselves as everyday starters. For now, Pham is the best option available, though he merely serves as a stopgap for a larger roster challenge.
Originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft, Pham made his MLB debut in 2014. Since then, he has bounced between seven teams over the past three seasons. Despite his journeyman status, he still possesses above-average plate discipline and solid bat speed, finishing the 2024 season with a .248/.305/.368 slash line.
