The Red Sox have signed right-handed pitcher to a minor league contract, according to KPRC’s Ari Alexander. The deal includes an invitation to Boston’s Major League spring training camp, along with more than $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on his MLB appearances.
If reaches those bonuses, his earnings could approach the $1.7 million salary MLBTR projected for him in arbitration for 2025. However, the Athletics outrighted him at the end of the season, effectively preempting arbitration. While $1.7 million isn’t a significant figure, even for Oakland, Adams’ 12% walk rate likely raised concerns despite his solid 3.92 ERA and 27.7% strikeout rate across 41 1/3 innings in their bullpen.
Adams’ 2024 numbers closely align with his career stats—4.10 ERA, 31.6% strikeout rate, and 13.9% walk rate over 155 2/3 Major League innings. His control issues have been notable, including a league-high 24 hit batters in 2021.
Over his eight MLB seasons, Adams has played with five different teams, varying from brief stints (two appearances each in 2018 and 2022) to more substantial roles, such as 41 1/3 innings with Oakland in 2024 and a career-high 52 2/3 innings with the 2021 Padres. His time with San Diego from 2020-22 was interrupted by flexor tendon surgery, which sidelined him for nearly all of 2022.
Boston will now attempt to address the 33-year-old’s control issues and maximize the potential of his slider-heavy repertoire. With clear strikeout ability, Adams could prove to be a valuable asset if he replicates his respectable 2024 performance or unlocks hidden potential. As a low-risk signing on a minor league deal, the Red Sox have nothing to lose by giving him a shot in spring training.
