The Boston Red Sox made a significant move this offseason by acquiring ace Garrett Crochet in a major trade, but they haven’t been very active otherwise. Despite presenting a $700 million offer for free agent Juan Soto, they haven’t shifted to a backup plan for that money.
In a recent prediction, Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley suggested that the Red Sox could use some of their funds to sign free-agent slugger Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles. Jon Heyman of the New York Post forecasts a $100 million deal for Santander following his impressive 44-homer season in 2024.
Buckley noted, “Anthony Santander had 44 reasons to believe a big payday was coming this offseason,” referencing his career-high 44 home runs, along with 91 runs and 102 RBI. These achievements were team highs for the 91-win Orioles and earned him his first All-Star selection and Silver Slugger award.
While Buckley acknowledges that Santander may not land the massive deal he’s hoping for, he’ll still receive a substantial contract, especially if it comes from the Red Sox.
A deal with Boston makes sense, as the team still has plenty of money to spend. If they don’t land one of the top pitchers, targeting a high-ceiling hitter like Santander could be a smart move.
