The Boston Red Sox kicked off their offseason in a big way last week by trading for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet, a move that also prevented the New York Yankees from acquiring the lefty. Now, the Red Sox may once again be competing with their division rival—this time for free-agent slugger Anthony Santander.
With outfielder Juan Soto now off the market after signing with the New York Mets, the Yankees are searching for a replacement in their lineup and have shown interest in Santander. The Yankees are no strangers to the 30-year-old switch-hitter, who has spent the past eight seasons in the AL East with the Baltimore Orioles. Santander is coming off a career-best 2024 campaign, earning his first All-Star nod and Silver Slugger Award. He smashed 44 home runs, drove in 102 runs, scored 91 times, and posted an impressive .814 OPS.
A return to Baltimore appears unlikely after the Orioles signed outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a three-year deal. That leaves the door open for Santander to potentially land in Boston instead of the Bronx. According to FanSided’s Michael Brakebill, Santander would be an ideal fit for Fenway Park. “Boston still needs another starter to round out an elite rotation, but they also need an outfielder,” Brakebill explained. “Switch-hitting Anthony Santander feels perfect for hitting balls over the Green Monster or wrapping them around the pesky pole. He hit 44 homers in 2024, and with Baltimore signing O’Neill, Santander will find a new home this winter.”
Spotrac projects a five-year, $89 million deal for Santander, but with teams that missed out on Soto now entering the mix, his contract could push into nine-figure territory. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller predicts Santander could land a $100 million deal this offseason.
