The St. Louis Cardinals are attempting to trade eight-time All-Star this offseason, but finding a trade partner has been difficult.
His priority is to join a playoff contender, though he recently blocked a potential trade to the Houston Astros, who have made the playoffs in nine of the last 10 years.
One potential option is a three-team trade involving the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies, which could land Arenado with a team offering a solid chance at a World Series title and boosting his Hall of Fame resume.
Alex Bregman is among the top remaining free agents, with reports suggesting he’s seeking a $200 million deal. The trade market is also buzzing with interest in Nolan Arenado and Alec Bohm, with nearly a third of MLB teams potentially eyeing Bohm. Among them, the Mariners might be the most eager.
His contract includes a no-trade clause, but he’s agreed to waive it for a trade to the Phillies, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, or his childhood favorite, the Dodgers.
So far this offseason, the Mariners have made minimal moves to address their 2024 offensive struggles, aside from releasing Luis Urias and non-tendering Josh Rojas to make space for an unspecified third baseman. Their budget limits free agent acquisitions, but Alec Bohm’s projected $8.1 million salary in 2025 fits comfortably within their budget. The proposed trade would have the Cardinals sending Arenado to Philadelphia, the Phillies moving Alec Bohm to Seattle, and the Mariners sending shortstop Colt Emerson, the No. 35 overall prospect, to St. Louis.
However, the Cardinals already have top prospect Masyn Winn set as their shortstop, making the acquisition of Emerson less logical for them, even though the trade could provide them with Seattle’s No. 1 overall prospect.
