In his first year as Washington’s defensive coordinator, Whitt made it clear that the Commanders plan to treat the former Alabama quarterback like a running back when he takes off with the ball. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Whitt didn’t hold back while outlining his strategy for containing Hurts.

“We’ve faced several quarterbacks like this before,” Whitt said. “If he’s going to run the ball, and the coordinator decides to use him that way, we’re going to hit him like a running back. That’s their decision—if they want him to take those hits, they’ll keep him running. Otherwise, they’ll keep him in the pocket, and we’ll adjust accordingly.”

Whitt’s comments follow Hurts’ impressive performance against the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, where he rushed for 70 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown run, in the divisional round.
