The Golden State Warriors have wasted no time filling out their roster after their 4-for-1 trade for Jimmy Butler, signing rookie center Quinten Post to a standard contract on Friday.
Post earned the promotion from a two-way deal after an impressive stretch of performances, securing a spot in the Warriors’ rotation and eventually a starting role over the last five games.
Signing Kevin Knox II is the obvious next move for the Warriors
If the Warriors want to keep rewarding strong performances, signing Kevin Knox II from their G League program would be the logical next step. As they monitor the buyout market in the coming days, they have the flexibility to add Knox now and bring in another player on a 10-day contract to round out a 14-man roster.
The former ninth overall pick has thrived with the Santa Cruz Warriors this season, averaging 22 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game after being waived by Golden State following the preseason. His play has only improved as the season has progressed, culminating in a dominant January that earned him G League Player of the Week honors. After averaging 18.8 points and 7.3 rebounds on 34% three-point shooting during the tip-off tournament, the 6’7″ forward has elevated his game in 11 regular-season appearances, posting 26.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting 43% from deep.
Knox has shown he deserves another NBA opportunity, having last played for the Detroit Pistons, where he averaged 7.2 points in 18.1 minutes per game. One challenge for the 25-year-old has been his time with struggling franchises, including the Pistons, Knicks, Hawks, and Trail Blazers, all of whom were in losing situations during his tenure.
Golden State may not be the dynasty they once were, but their trade for Jimmy Butler signals their intent to remain competitive. While they might prioritize adding a backup point guard after losing Dennis Schroder or a veteran stretch big after missing out on Nikola Vucevic, Knox’s size, shooting, and athleticism could be valuable—especially in the wake of Andrew Wiggins’ departure.
Although Knox is currently sidelined with an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last five G League games, that shouldn’t prevent him from earning another NBA shot—one the Warriors are now in a position to offer following the Butler trade.
