Many star wide receivers in the NFL often express their frustration when they’re not involved in the game, despite how opposing defenses may be limiting their impact. However, forcing the ball to a player, even a superstar, isn’t always the right move when a defense is effectively neutralizing them. One player who is extremely difficult for defenses to contain is Minnesota Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson, who has shown his ability to beat both zone and man coverage, even when double-teamed. This forces teams to get creative, often resorting to sending multiple defenders his way.
While the Vikings would love to get Jefferson the ball as often as possible, they showed against the Chicago Bears that they can still capitalize when defenses focus too heavily on him. In their 30-27 overtime win over the Bears, Chicago limited Jefferson to just two catches for 27 yards, but he still managed to have a significant impact by drawing two pass interference penalties. The attention on him opened up opportunities for other players on the Vikings offense, helping them succeed. Despite the game going into overtime, the result was more a reflection of defensive and special teams errors than offensive struggles. The Vikings proved they have other weapons and will make teams pay whether or not they focus on Jefferson.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell acknowledged the importance of getting Jefferson involved, but he also praised the performances of other players, including Sam Darnold, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. While Jefferson remains a key part of the offense, O’Connell noted that he handles his quiet games with great professionalism, always supporting his teammates. Jefferson’s competitive nature is clear, but he’s not one to throw tantrums when he isn’t heavily involved. Instead, he’s typically one of the first to celebrate the success of others.
Despite being held in check at times, Jefferson is still having an outstanding season. He ranks highly in targets, catches, yards, and touchdowns, proving that even when defenses try to limit him, he’s still a major force. The Vikings’ ability to make opposing defenses pay for focusing on Jefferson only increases the likelihood that teams will try different strategies, potentially giving Jefferson more chances to shine.
