The New York Yankees have officially moved on from second baseman Gleyber Torres, who reportedly agreed to a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on Friday morning. His departure leaves a significant gap in the Yankees’ infield. However, Torres may not be the only player the Yankees part ways with this offseason.
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently predicted that the team could also cut ties with outfielder Alex Verdugo, who is expected to sign a four-year, $60 million deal, according to Spotrac. “For Yankees fans who had grown frustrated with Verdugo by the end of the season, his role has already been filled,” Rotman wrote. “While they lost Soto, they replaced him with Cody Bellinger, who is expected to be the starting center fielder. Aaron Judge will return to right field, and now it’s time for Jasson Dominguez to take over as left fielder. The Yankees could potentially bring Verdugo back as a bench player, but they already have Trent Grisham on the roster.” Verdugo, who started many games for manager Aaron Boone in 2024, no longer has a starting spot. As Rotman points out, Bellinger, Judge, and Dominguez will be the starters, with Grisham serving as a left-handed bat off the bench. New York is unlikely to pay nearly $20 million a year for a backup outfielder.
