The Boston Red Sox still have significant financial flexibility this offseason.
Their most notable free-agent signing so far has been a one-year, $21 million deal with All-Star starter Walker Buehler—a strong addition to the rotation. However, beyond Buehler, their moves in free agency have been relatively minor.
Boston also signed Aroldis Chapman and Patrick Sandoval, though neither contract was particularly large. As a result, the team still has room to make additional moves before Spring Training while remaining under the competitive balance tax threshold.
What could their next move be? The most logical areas for improvement would be adding another right-handed bat and a high-leverage bullpen arm. While Alex Bregman has been linked to Boston, his signing appears unlikely. However, there are still available players who could help bolster the roster.
During a recent Q&A with Red Sox fans, The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey mentioned that the team recently scouted eight-time All-Star Max Scherzer.
“Meanwhile, Max Scherzer reportedly held a workout recently and the Red Sox had scouts in attendance,” McCaffrey noted. “Scherzer turns 40 this summer and has battled various injuries in recent years. In 2024, he made nine starts for Texas, posting a 3.95 ERA. He missed time due to offseason back surgery and later dealt with a nerve issue in his hand, shoulder fatigue, and a strained hamstring. Integrating him into the rotation would have been challenging, but if healthy, he could have been an intriguing addition.”
Ultimately, Scherzer signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. While Boston won’t be adding the future Hall of Famer, their recent scouting activity suggests they remain interested in pitching upgrades.
