Leicester City Complete Surprise Signing of Goalkeeper Fran Vieites
Leicester City have secured their fifth signing of the summer, bringing in free agent goalkeeper Fran Vieites on a two-year deal.
The Foxes had been searching for additional senior goalkeeping cover to support Jakub Stolarczyk and Asmir Begovic but were unable to finalize a deal during the transfer window. Five days after it closed, they moved quickly to land the former Real Betis shot-stopper, who mutually terminated his contract with the La Liga club in August following the arrival of Pau López.
The 26-year-old spent the last two seasons as Betis’ backup, making 16 appearances across all competitions last term, including all of their Europa Conference League knockout matches except the final against Chelsea.
Vieites’ career began early — he made his senior debut at just 15 for his boyhood club Bertamirans in Spain’s fourth tier before moving to Celta Vigo, where he played in the B team. He later had spells at Lugo in the second division before joining Betis three years ago.
After becoming a free agent, Vieites attracted interest from several Spanish sides, including Valencia, Rayo Vallecano, Girona, Real Oviedo, and his former club Celta, before opting for Leicester City.
