The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly exploring a major contract extension to keep key goaltender Anthony Stolarz in the fold, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. This comes shortly after the Leafs locked up goalie Dennis Hildeby with a three-year deal.
Pagnotta notes that Toronto has “started” discussions with 31-year-old Stolarz, whose current contract expires at the end of the upcoming season. While nothing is close to finalized, Stolarz is expected to remain the Leafs’ starting goalie heading into his second season with the team.
A Bold Bet on Stolarz
Toronto is taking a calculated gamble by committing to Stolarz as their starter. Despite never previously holding a #1 role for a full season, Stolarz surprised many last year by posting an impressive .926 save percentage and a 21-8-3 record over 34 games. If he continues this form, it could cement his place as a long-term NHL starter.
The Leafs have historically been cautious with their goaltending decisions, having let solid goalies like Jack Campbell and Ilya Samsonov leave in the past. Any extension for Stolarz will likely reflect that prudence.

Despite recent rumors linking Carter Hart to Toronto, league sources confirm that the Leafs are not considering him. Their current goaltending depth—Stolarz, Woll, Hildeby, and Akhtyamov—is expected to remain the focus, signaling confidence in their existing roster.
For now, the Leafs appear committed to seeing Stolarz and Woll as their long-term solutions in net, with the organization showing patience and trust in their current pipeline.
