Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta stands out as one of the more intriguing free agents still available. With the Red Sox bringing in Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet earlier this offseason, it seems likely Pivetta’s time in Boston has come to an end. Now, the 31-year-old right-hander remains on the open market with his future uncertain.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently highlighted the Toronto Blue Jays as a potential destination for Pivetta. According to Spotrac, the veteran pitcher is projected to command a $60 million deal.
“In what feels like a game of ‘One of these things is not like the other,’ the three players who rejected qualifying offers and still haven’t signed contracts are Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman … and Nick Pivetta,” Miller wrote. “He provided solid value to the Red Sox over the past four seasons, consistently pitching at least 140 innings per year with an ERA ranging from 4.04 to 4.56.
“Was that enough for the almost 32-year-old to secure a three- or four-year contract on the open market? So far, the answer seems to be no. The longer he remains unsigned, the more likely it becomes that he settles for a ‘one year plus a player option’ deal that has become increasingly popular in recent years.”
The Blue Jays don’t necessarily need to bolster their starting rotation, but after missing out on several star free agents, it might make sense to invest in someone like Pivetta. If he’s open to a two-year contract favorable to Toronto, it would be wise for the Blue Jays to pursue him.
