MASSIVE MOVE DONE: Phillies sign another2-time World Series champ from Dodgers to fix glaring weakness

The Philadelphia Phillies could remain contenders in the National League next season, but their roster has significant weaknesses.

When compared to the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, the Phillies lack both the top-tier talent and the depth typically required to secure a championship. Perhaps their best move might involve addressing one of their biggest roster flaws by signing a former Dodgers player.

In an analysis by Eno Sarris of The Athletic, he highlighted the biggest weaknesses among MLB’s projected contenders, identifying the Phillies’ corner outfield as a glaring issue. According to Fangraphs, Philadelphia’s corner outfielders are projected to contribute just 1.1 WAR next season, the lowest of any contender on the list.

To address this, Sarris suggested the Phillies consider signing former Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernández. He noted Hernández could significantly improve their outfield defense and bring more certainty to the roster.

“The last roster spot might currently go to 30-year-old Weston Wilson, who played all over the field last year,” Sarris wrote. “But would a player like Kiké Hernández make more sense? He offers more offensive reliability and has been a positive defensive asset at every position he’s played.”

Hernández could serve as a late-game defensive replacement for Nick Castellanos while also providing versatility across multiple positions. Last season, Hernández hit .229/.281/.373 in 126 games, playing 71 games at third base, 25 in the outfield, 37 at other infield positions, and even pitching in four games.

The appeal of Hernández lies in his affordability, versatility, and potential fit in a semi-regular role with the Phillies, as he’s not expected to see much playing time in Los Angeles. Additionally, his reputation as a strong locker room presence could seamlessly complement the Phillies’ team chemistry.

Ultimately, it’s up to Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies’ front office to determine whether Hernández is the right addition to fill this key roster need.
