The New York Yankees are reportedly narrowing their options at first base, focusing on more cost-effective choices like Paul Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana. However, there might be a strategic reason behind their frugal approach.
key man of FanSided suggests the Yankees are planning for the future, eyeing the possibility of signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in free agency next offseason. “The most logical explanation for New York’s thrifty decision is that they don’t want to commit long-term resources to first base before they know where Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s future lies,” Haringey writes.
There’s no certainty Guerrero Jr. will even become a free agent, though. While the Yankees might hope for that outcome, it’s far from guaranteed. As Haringey points out, if the Blue Jays fail to secure an extension and struggle during the season, Guerrero could become the centerpiece of trade talks at the deadline. Even so, it’s unlikely the Blue Jays would trade him to a division rival like the Yankees, whom they face 13 times a year, regardless of the offer.
Haringey’s theory might align with the Yankees’ intentions, but a lot of variables would need to fall into place for GM Brian Cashman’s plan to succeed.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Yankees have already committed significant funds this offseason, including $218 million to Max Fried, $22.5 million to Cody Bellinger, and $8.4 million to Devin Williams. With nearly $250 million spent on these three players alone, the Yankees may have little room left in their offseason budget.
