As the Kansas City Royals explore trade options ahead of the upcoming deadline, one name reportedly drawing their interest is Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds. While Kansas City might move some of its own players, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Reynolds is someone the Royals are keeping an eye on.
Rosenthal highlighted the Royals’ history with switch-hitters—pointing to Kendrys Morales’ key role in their 2015 World Series run and their offseason offer to Anthony Santander. Reynolds now appears to be the next potential target, though no formal trade discussions have begun.
“Royals officials still remember the influence switch-hitter Kendrys Morales had during their championship season,” Rosenthal wrote. “They offered a three-year, $66 million deal to switch-hitting outfielder Anthony Santander this past offseason. Now, they’re showing interest in another switch-hitter—Pittsburgh’s Bryan Reynolds.”
He added that while talks haven’t started in earnest, the Royals—who rank last in MLB in runs scored—are evaluating multiple offensive options. Reynolds, despite a sluggish start to 2025, could be a logical fit if his recent improvement continues.
However, Reynolds’ contract may be a sticking point. The 30-year-old is under contract through 2030, with $74 million still owed from 2026 to 2030. That could present financial concerns for Kansas City, depending on his performance moving forward.
“If Reynolds regains his offensive form from 2021–2024, his contract could be a bargain compared to free agency prices,” Rosenthal noted. “But if not, the long-term deal could quickly become burdensome. He also has a $2 million buyout attached to a $20 million team option in 2031.”
Reynolds has been trending upward, improving his OPS from .644 in March/April to .732 in May and .772 in June. His defense remains a concern, and it’s unclear what the Pirates will demand in return. Still, with offense at a premium across the league, Reynolds is expected to generate interest.
The Royals, currently sitting at 40-47 and fourth in the AL Central, are aiming to bolster their lineup. They finish a series against the Mariners on Thursday before hosting the Diamondbacks for a weekend set.
