Next Contract for Edmonton Oilers Defender
With the summer in full swing, NHL rumours are still buzzing, and while many signings are already wrapped up, attention is now turning to next year. A number of high-profile players could hit the free agent market in 2026, with some extension talks already underway. However, a few of these negotiations might be more complicated than expected.
One team actively looking to secure an important player is the Edmonton Oilers. This latest round of NHL rumours centers on a key defensive contributor and his upcoming contract.
Possible Deals for Edmonton Oilers Defenseman
Rumour: Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal has speculated about what the Oilers might do when it comes to re-signing defenseman Jake Walman.
Analysis: Walman, who joined the Oilers from the San Jose Sharks, has quickly become a crucial part of Edmonton’s defense. While Evan Bouchard often grabs the headlines, Walman’s arrival was a significant addition for the team.
Despite this, the Oilers are facing a major concern: ensuring they have the financial flexibility to extend Connor McDavid’s massive contract. As a result, Walman’s upcoming deal could prove trickier than expected.
The 29-year-old defenseman is currently in the final year of a contract worth $3.4 million per season. With his rising value, a sizable raise seems imminent, but Edmonton’s priority will likely be securing McDavid’s future before finalizing any deals for Walman.
What It Means
Leavins compared Walman to other defenders who recently signed big deals. For instance, Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour, who inked a contract worth $7 million in 2024, is a similar case. Winnipeg Jets’ Neal Pionk also commands $7 million per season, and Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin currently earns $7.35 million. Hanifin’s deal might be even higher, given Nevada’s lack of state sales tax.
If Walman hits the free agent market, it could be problematic for the Oilers. He’s become a key player on Edmonton’s second power-play unit, helping to take some pressure off Bouchard, who leads the top unit. Another strong season leading the second power-play could boost his market value significantly.
Leavins suggested the Oilers aim to finalize a deal with Walman before the season starts. It’s not unheard of for Edmonton to lock down key players in the final weeks of the offseason, as they did with Leon Draisaitl in September. There’s hope that McDavid and/or Walman could follow suit and sign an extension before training camp begins.
