However, the front office is likely already planning for the offseason to further strengthen the roster. An intriguing proposal has emerged, with Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggesting the Phillies as a prime destination for New York Mets’ star first baseman Pete Alonso.
Miller speculated, “What if they fail to re-sign Kyle Schwarber, though, resulting in a void at DH to be filled by Harper and/or Castellanos? Doesn’t Alonso’s 158 home runs since the beginning of 2022 become the logical top target to backfill the 187 home runs Schwarber has hit during that time?” In the 2025 season, Alonso played all 162 games for the Mets, hitting 38 home runs, driving in 126 RBIs, and posting a .272/.347/.525 slash line with an .871 OPS. At 30, Alonso remains a potent force, making him an excellent option for the Phillies, particularly if they lose Schwarber in free agency.
While retaining Schwarber is the preferred outcome, signing Alonso would be a strong alternative. For now, this remains a speculative idea, as the Phillies’ priority is their postseason campaign, but it’s a storyline to watch in the coming weeks and months.
