The Boston Red Sox reportedly have their sights set on Tanner Scott, but securing the All-Star reliever won’t come cheap.
Scott, widely regarded as the top reliever on the free-agent market, had an outstanding 2024 season and is expected to set the standard for relief contracts. According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, Boston is the “clear” favorite to sign the 30-year-old lefty.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam recently shed light on the Scott sweepstakes, including the hefty price tag he might command.
“It’s a competitive market for Tanner Scott, who will establish the pace for the slow-developing relief market once he signs,” Cotillo shared on the X platform. “The Red Sox have shown interest in top-tier relievers and have the financial flexibility to make a splash. (McAdam) has mentioned a $20 million AAV is possible, while I’ve heard there are likely several big-market teams in the mix.”
Adding Scott would be a significant boost for the Red Sox, who currently lack a proven closer.
Luis Guerrero, Liam Hendriks, and Justin Slaten are seen as the top internal options, with Guerrero emerging as the most intriguing candidate after an impressive late-season stint. Meanwhile, veteran Aroldis Chapman, though experienced, may be better suited for a setup role at this stage in his career.
If signed, Scott would immediately anchor Boston’s bullpen. In 2024, he delivered a stellar 1.75 ERA, a 1.125 WHIP, and 22 saves over 72 appearances while splitting time between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
