The Boston Red Sox are expected to take an aggressive approach in free agency this offseason. Among their potential targets is New York Yankees superstar outfielder Juan Soto, though they’re not considered front-runners in the sweepstakes. Before diving fully into the free-agent pool, however, the Red Sox must address their own free agents. One notable name is breakout outfielder Tyler O’Neill, who is drawing interest from contending teams.
FanSided’s Nick Villano recently predicted that O’Neill is unlikely to stay in Boston, projecting instead that he could land with the Chicago Cubs under new manager Craig Counsell. According to Spotrac, O’Neill is expected to command a three-year, $49 million contract this winter. Villano explained, “We can absolutely see the Chicago Cubs making a big move this offseason, but they might prefer a more measured approach. While they’ll explore some of the top free-agent outfielders, O’Neill would be a smart option when all is said and done. At under 30 years old, he still has room to grow. Though there are concerns about his consistency, he could be on the verge of unlocking his full potential.”
The Cubs are focused on improving their offense while managing costs, and O’Neill fits the bill. Last season, he hit 31 home runs with an .847 OPS, showing flashes of his 2021 form when he was a 26-year-old star, rather than a player in decline. If he stays healthy, O’Neill could provide Chicago with a significant upgrade in the outfield at a more affordable price than other top free agents.
