Red Wings Prospect Nate Danielson Assigned to AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins
Steve Yzerman has long been known for his patient approach to player development, and this season is no different. While three young players earned NHL spots after strong training camps, several others continue to hone their skills in the AHL.
The Grand Rapids Griffins have started the season on fire, opening with a perfect 4-0 record. Now, the Detroit Red Wings have confirmed that one of their top prospects, Nate Danielson, will join the Griffins following a promising but injury-interrupted preseason.
Danielson Returns to Action After Injury
Danielson has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury suffered during a preseason matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. Following that setback, head coach Todd McLellan praised the 19-year-old’s performance and suggested that a roster spot was within reach had he stayed healthy.
“He’s skating, so that’s good,” McLellan said. “I don’t have a timeline yet, but it’s a positive sign. From what I saw, he would have had an outstanding opportunity to make the team. We just need to get him healthy because I believe he can play here.”
McLellan also noted that Danielson’s absence created chances for other players to step up — a reminder of how competitive the Red Wings’ roster battle has become.
Given Danielson’s talent and work ethic, his time in the AHL may be brief if he performs well. The Griffins will look to continue their unbeaten start tonight against the Manitoba Moose, with a chance to tie the franchise record for the longest winning streak to open a season.
