The New York Yankees have been actively making roster upgrades after missing out on Juan Soto, but general manager Brian Cashman still faces a gap at second base. One potential solution could be re-signing two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres. Earlier this year, Torres expressed his desire to remain a Yankee for life, but Cashman has remained non-committal, making a reunion between the two sides seem unlikely.
After a solid 2023 season with a .800 OPS, 25 home runs, and 68 RBIs, Torres’ performance dipped in 2024 to a .709 OPS, 15 homers, and 63 RBIs. Could the Washington Nationals be a potential destination for the 28-year-old slugger? According to Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein, it’s a real possibility. “As one of the few true starting second basemen available in free agency—alongside utility players like Ha-Seong Kim and Jose Iglesias—Torres should draw plenty of interest,” Finkelstein explained. “However, teams may hesitate to offer a lengthy deal despite his age.”
At the start of the 2024 season, The Athletic’s Tim Britton projected Torres could secure a four-year, $68 million contract. But after a subpar campaign, his market value has dropped significantly. Spotrac now estimates a three-year, $20 million deal, while Finkelstein predicts a two-year, $28 million contract with an opt-out after the first year.
