Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner is set to become a free agent on July 1, and according to Andy Strickland of FanDuel Sports Network, he is “not expected to return to Toronto” for the 2025 season.
Marner, who was selected fourth overall by the Leafs in the 2015 NHL Draft, has spent the past nine seasons with his hometown team. During that time, the 28-year-old forward has amassed 221 goals, 520 assists, and 741 points in regular-season play.
While it remains uncertain where Marner will end up next, teams such as the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, and Anaheim Ducks have all been linked as potential destinations.
In other news, former Maple Leaf Matt Martin officially announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday and was named special assistant to New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche.
Following the announcement, Marner shared the NHL’s retirement tribute to Martin on social media, adding his own message:
“One of one❤️ congrats Bro!!”
Martin, 36, was drafted by the Islanders in the fifth round of the 2008 draft. He played his first seven seasons with the team before joining Toronto for two years during Marner’s early career. The pair reached the playoffs twice but were eliminated in the first round both times. Martin went on to spend the last seven years of his career back with the Islanders, retiring after 987 NHL games with 81 goals, 97 assists, and 178 points.
