REPORT: Maple Leafs GM depart Top player to test free agency, calls contract talks with John Tavares ‘positive’

Marner Expected to Explore Free Agency

On June 26, 2025, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving said that Mitch Marner is likely to hit the open market on July 1, stating, “Unless something significant changes, I’d expect he’s going to test free agency” (nhl.com). While contract discussions have taken place, progress has been limited. If Marner enters free agency, he’ll no longer be eligible for an eight-year contract, which only Toronto can offer before July 1—limiting any team’s offer, including the Leafs, to seven years afterward (sportsnet.ca). The 28-year-old winger is coming off a 102-point campaign, ranking fifth in the NHL, and is projected to command $12 million or more annually on the market.

Optimism in Tavares Negotiations

Treliving also offered a positive update on talks with veteran center John Tavares, now 34, saying both sides are aligned: “John wants to stay, and we want to keep John” (sportsnet.ca). Tavares notched 38 goals and 36 assists last season and is expected to return for the 2025–26 campaign.
