Sixteen-year-old Wilkes, who made his senior debut last season in an EFL Trophy loss to Aston Villa’s under-21s, has signed on as a first-year scholar with Norwich City. He’ll begin his time at Carrow Road with the club’s under-18 squad.
His arrival is part of a broader academy revamp led by City sporting director Ben Knapper, who is aiming to reshape both the development and senior teams. Last month, young keeper Rylee Mitchell joined from Stevenage, and Knapper is also eyeing additions such as Ipswich’s Luke Towler, Swindon’s Botan Ameen, and Coventry goalkeeper Luis Lines.
Wilkes gained recognition as the only player outside the Premier League and Championship to be called up to England’s under-15 squad last year. He has since earned two caps for the under-16s.
Reflecting on the move, he said: “I’m really looking forward to getting started. I’m an attacking midfielder who can play anywhere across the middle. I love creating chances and scoring goals—that’s my game.
“My time at Fleetwood helped shape me as a player and as a person. I’m eager to kick off pre-season. It’s been a tough balance with exams, but now that they’re done, I can focus fully on football.
“This is my first time living away from home, so I just want to settle in, adjust, and contribute as much as I can with goals and assists.”
