The St. Louis Cardinals have been the subject of trade speculation as the July 31 deadline approaches, but the team is performing well, sitting just five games back of the division-leading Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Despite the rumors, one of their standout players is reportedly interested in staying put.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, All-Star closer Ryan Helsley is open to discussing a new contract with the Cardinals. Although there has been chatter about a potential trade involving the 30-year-old, the club’s strong play could push the front office to consider a long-term extension instead.
“There’s a lot to unpack here,” Goold said. “First, while talks haven’t started yet, that doesn’t mean they won’t. Helsley is still open to negotiations, so the opportunity remains. Second, with top relievers making close to $20 million annually, Helsley’s value would likely start above $16 million per year. Think in the range of a four-year deal with a fifth-year option, or possibly a five-year contract.
