The Los Angeles Rams’ decision to part ways with Cooper Kupp after eight productive seasons signaled a shift in direction. While they had no intention of reversing course on Kupp, their decision became more understandable after signing Davante Adams.
One of the Rams’ biggest weaknesses in the second half of the season and their playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was a lack of depth at the offensive skill positions to overcome an elite defense. Adams addresses that issue for Los Angeles.
With Adams, the Rams now have a true No. 1 wide receiver—something they technically lacked last season. While they had a solid group of receivers, none matched Adams’ talent or impact.
Rohan Nadkarni of NBC News praised the signing, calling it one of the best free-agent moves in the NFL. Given the Rams’ recent success, it’s hard to disagree. They appear well-positioned for the upcoming season.
“I don’t think he’s the player he was five seasons ago, but I love the Los Angeles Rams adding Davante Adams on a two-year deal. The Rams are making strong moves this offseason, bringing back quarterback Matthew Stafford to a team that nearly upset the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles last postseason,” Nadkarni said.
While Adams may have lost a step with age, he remains one of the league’s top receivers. Now, he’ll have another high-level quarterback throwing to him, much like he did earlier in his career with the Packers and later with the Raiders.
“Adams, a three-time All-Pro with the Packers and Raiders, is a great addition to a receiver group that includes Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell. What I like about this unit is the diversity of playing styles, and I’d bet on Adams having a bounce-back season with a well-run organization and an offensive mastermind in Sean McVay. Stafford is also the best quarterback Adams has played with since leaving Green Bay,” Nadkarni added.
