The Toronto Blue Jays have made another roster move, bringing back rookie left-hander from Triple-A Buffalo while designating veteran right-hander José Ureña for assignment. Lucas, who began the season with the big-league club and delivered two scoreless outings in a row, will be active for Saturday’s game against the Oakland Athletics. With Erik Swanson set to return and make his 2025 debut, Lucas is expected to serve as a temporary innings-eater before likely being optioned again on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Lucas initially impressed during his stint in April, notably shutting down the Boston Red Sox over 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts. However, his follow-up performance against Seattle lasted just 1.2 innings and resulted in a loss, prompting a demotion. Still, with starter Jake Bloss sidelined for the season due to elbow surgery, the Jays are short on rotation depth, and Lucas presents a capable — if inconsistent — option.
Although Lucas has posted a 5.88 ERA in Triple-A this season, he’s also notched 24 strikeouts in 26 innings. Facing a struggling A’s lineup could provide a low-pressure chance to rebuild his confidence and show that he still belongs at the MLB level.
