Stoke City boss Mark Robins has described the international break as “strange,” with many players returning later in the week. Fourteen Stoke players were away on international duty, making preparation for Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City (15:00 BST) more challenging.
Stoke have started the season strongly with three wins from four games, their only defeat coming against West Bromwich Albion.
“There’s been a mix of rest, recovery, and training. I gave players a few days off at the start and end of the week, with work in between, which generally works,” Robins told BBC Radio Stoke. “Around half the squad has been away, so we’ve had to adjust training and factor in each player’s international contribution. It’s unusual because they return at different times, but now we’re preparing for a really tough opponent in Birmingham City.”
Robins also praised Blues head coach Chris Davies, who led Birmingham to a record-breaking League One season last year. “Their plans for a new stadium and the club’s rejuvenation are clear, and Davies has been a key catalyst. They’re aggressive, hardworking, and talented, so it’s a tough game—but a brilliant one to restart the season with.”
