North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick is assembling an impressive coaching staff as he embarks on his first college head coaching role. He has already brought in several notable names, including Freddie Kitchens, Steve Belichick, Natrone Means, and Matt Lombardi. Additionally, Michael Lombardi serves as North Carolina’s general manager, highlighting Belichick’s commitment to building a strong program.
On Friday, reports surfaced that Belichick had added another familiar face—former New England Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins. Collins shared the news in an interview with TMZ Sports, which was later confirmed by On3.
“I’m trying to step into another lane that I know I’d be great in—that’s coaching,” Collins said. “Right now, I’m working with the defense, mainly linebackers, but I’m still figuring things out. I’m involved all over the defense at the moment.”
When asked how the opportunity came about, Collins explained, “I reached out. I just reached out to him, and he gave me the opportunity—so here I am.”

Jamie Collins was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played with the team until 2016, when he was traded to the Cleveland Browns midseason. Collins later returned to New England twice—first in 2019 and again in 2021 and 2022—ultimately finishing his NFL career with the Patriots.
Belichick, who coached the Patriots from 2000 to 2023, and Collins won Super Bowl XLIX together. After retiring in October 2023, Collins is now taking the next step in his football career by joining Belichick’s coaching staff at North Carolina.
