German football’s restart plans have hit a setback after 2. Bundesliga side Dynamo Dresden confirmed their entire squad has been placed in isolation.
The club announced that two players returned positive Covid-19 tests during routine checks, though both are currently symptom-free. As a result, the squad and coaching staff have been ordered into a two-week home quarantine, meaning Dresden cannot train or compete during that period.
Dresden had been scheduled to resume their season this weekend, but the fixture has now been postponed. The Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga had been preparing for a return behind closed doors under strict health protocols, but the situation in Dresden has underlined the challenges still facing the leagues.
Sporting director Ralf Minge explained:
“Over recent weeks, we’ve invested enormous effort and resources to meet every medical and hygiene requirement. Despite this, we now have to accept that we cannot train or play matches over the next 14 days. We remain in constant contact with the health authorities and the DFL to coordinate the next steps.”
The development comes just as clubs across Germany had stepped up full-contact training, highlighting the ongoing risks of restarting professional football during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, other European leagues have also reported fresh cases in recent days, forcing further precautionary measures as football edges toward a full return.
